2017 City Roots Farmers Market Guidelines
The City Roots Farmer’s Market (CRFM) guidelines are intended to be fair and to uphold the purpose of the market as a producer-based, local market. City Roots owners Robbie and Eric McClam and CRFM Market Manager oversee the operation of the market. City Roots may modify or add to these rules at any time to better serve the market’s interests.
PURPOSE: The City Roots Farmers Market was established in 2016 to provide locally grown food products, to sustain farmers in the Midlands area, and strengthen a sense of community. As a “producer based” farmers market, it supports local farms, food entrepreneurs and “makers” of sustainable goods as a viable part of the community by providing a place to sell their products directly to consumers.
TIME & PLACE:
The City Roots Farmer’s Market operates a year-round, weekly market held on Thursdays from 4pm-7pm., rain or shine. The market is located at City Roots Farm: 1005 Airport Blvd in Columbia, SC29205, across from Owen Field airport in the outskirts of the Rosewood neighborhood.
Market regularly takes place under the farm’s covered Event Pavilion. The Pavilion offers lighting and fans (when warm), as well as roll-down plastic sides and heaters (when cool). Limited electricity is available for vendors; please ask ahead of time if electricity is needed. Management reserves the right to move the Market due to hazardous weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
Market Day Set-Up Guidelines
Vendors are responsible for bringing all of their own tables, chairs, linens et al. Tents are not necessary as market occurs under the Pavilion. Market Management will communicate any extenuating circumstances in which market set-up/location changes. Set-up starts at 3pm. All vendors have an assigned spot. Check in with the Market Manager upon arrival to be directed to your spot!
CRFM currently operates on a one vendor per food product category basis. If and when demand grows beyond a producer’s capacity to meet demand for a product, the Market Management team will consider additional vendors for that product. Currently (2017), there is no demand beyond what we currently offer in the categories of: vegetables and some fruit, pasture-raised meats, free-range eggs, coastal Carolina seafood, milled maize products, or goat cheese.
The Market accepts applications for new vendors for spaces created by turnover or by the desire to offer more variety/new products. New Vendors are selected by application only and after approval of Farmers Market Management Team. Vendors may apply at any time.
RETURNING VENDORS –
Market Management must know how many committed vendors they will have month-to-month to determine space available for new applicants. Returning vendors can renew their commitment by emailing the Market Manager up to 2 weeks prior to month’s end. City Roots maintains the right to discointinue vendors at its discretion.
ELIGIBLE VENDORS for 2017 ARE:
Bakers: makers of locally baked, artisan goods.
Makers of specialty local, consumable products such as canned goods or prepared foods (see inspected kitchen and rules for prepared foods); preference for locally sourced ingredients.
Makers of soaps and body care products from local and all-natural ingredients.
Makers of naturally-dyed textiles; preference for locally sourced raw ingredients.
Makers of specialty oils, preference for locally sourced ingredients.
Community organizations with non-food items promoting a cause.
Vendor Fees are $15 per market paid by cash, check or credit card either. Fees can be paid in advance and online at http://www.cityroots.org/farmers-market-vendors/ or on the day-of market. Non-profits are exempt of vendor fees if accepted.
All sellers must reside and produce items they sell within South Carolina. Sellers must be the original producer or a family member or employee of the producer. No buying and reselling of product is allowed. With prior permission of CRFM only, a unique product may be sold on behalf of a CRFM-approved farmer by another CRFM – approved farmer if it meets Market criteria. Application and full booth fees are required for product to be sold by another vendor under this arrangement. If a producer’s growing, sourcing or selling methods change from what is stated in the application, the producer must notify the Market manager promptly. Vendors must notify the Market manager about any new products they would like to sell that are not listed on their application and get approval before bringing those products to Market.
Community organizations are welcome to submit an application for a booth space to raise awareness of their community causes; preference given to local food, environmental conservation and preservation efforts. Organizations are accepted on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of Market Management Team.
